A lost drive that a stranger cannot read

An encrypted drive scrambles everything written to it with a key that only your password or PIN unlocks. If the drive is lost, the finder sees noise. Keypad drives take the PIN on the drive itself, so they work on any computer without software. The others ask for the password in an app when plugged in.

Many employers and agencies ask for drives validated to FIPS 140-3, the federal standard for encryption modules. Drives validated to the older FIPS 140-2 are accepted for existing systems only since September 2026. Check what your workplace requires, and keep a second copy of anything on the drive: too many wrong PINs erase it by design.
